Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness Season 1 Review

Time to bring the thunder!

LOAfallKung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness is an animated series that airs on Nickelodeon.  It takes place between the first and second movies, following Po as he continues his training to become a true hero.  Season one started off pretty well.  It got right into the antics and relationships we all know from the films.  The best part of the first season was how they fleshed out the actual world it takes place in, as well as expanding the mystical side of kung fu.  Each episode is accompanied at some time by a short 2D animated backstory of some kind.  This really breaks things up, allowing for further storytelling and character expansion.  We meet the warthog Dao Dai who helped build the training hall at the Jade Palace.  He uses machines in an attempt to compensate for his horrible kung fu skills.  At other times we met former members of the Furious Five, and even masters who sought Shi Fu’s position.  This was all brought together with the same level of writing and relative depth of the films while using a fraction of the budget. Each episode is relevant and follows with a lesson learned that helps everyone involved grow in some way.  Plus, the action is pretty good.

With a fleshed out setting and expanded relationships, the first season has shown an exceptional level of promise.  If you haven’t seen it, go do so, its worth the watch.  I’m not going to give a play by play of the season because you need to find out for yourself.  Dreamworks and Nick are really setting the bar with this one.  Watch it, have fun, and stay tuned for the next two seasons!
