Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man #3 Review

Miles Morales is up to his neck with drama and disaster this the final issue of the Cataclysm mini-series. So at the end of last issue Miles has revealed his secret identity to his mutant hating father and of course he doesn’t take it well. In fact he kinda freaks out blaming Miles for the deaths of his brother and wife. Miles, with all hell breaking loose in his life and in the world keeps his focus and composure trying to get his dad to safety. His dad however ignores his son’s pleas instead he gives into his rage so much so that he hits his son with his cane. Just when things couldn’t get any worse they do when an airplane that was supposed to land in the now, non-existent New Jersey crashes in their neighborhood.UltSpidC302Ultimate Spider

Rushing into full hero mode Miles saves his dad from falling debris then tells him to wait in the safety of their home while he goes to help with the crash site. Swinging into the crash site Miles surveys the crash site when Spider-Girl arrives to aid him. The spiders begin to help the injured passengers out of the plane. Spider-Man goes inside to make sure the plane is clear when he encounters an unconscious J. Jonah Jameson. After saving Jameson the plane explodes threatening the heroes and the survivors. As Jessica and Miles debate how to relocate the survivors help arrives in the form of Ultimate Cloak and Dagger. Cloak uses his powers to transport the survivors to a hospital in Pittsburg. While preparing to move the final survivors flaming debris begins to fall towards the group. However they are saved by former villainess turned hero Bombshell. Being one of the last people to be sent to the hospital Jameson promises the young heroes that he will change their lives. Miles leaves the other heroes to finish the relocation as he travels home only to find the apartment empty and his dad gone. The comic ends with Miles getting the call from Captain America to join the Ultimates in a last-ditch effort to save the planet from Galactus. UltSpidC303

Bendis has been on a writing rampage since the Marvel Now launch and this book is no different. This book was an emotional roller coaster and I enjoyed my ride. I love how Miles is living up to the Parker legacy even when his personal life has hit the crapper. This book nicely sets up the recently announced All-New Ultimates featuring the young heroes of this book plus X-Man Kitty Pryde. I am looking forward to the confrontation between Miles and his dad. This has been easily one of my favorite Cataclysm tie-ins.
